Worried About "Rogue Movers?"

Worried About "Rogue Movers?"  New Law May Help

By Kelli B. Grant

Consumers moving across state lines will soon get some extra protection from "rogue movers" - scammers who offer low bids, only to demand more cash once the truck is loaded.

Beware of Scam Moving Companies!

Half Price Movers is a qualified, BBB rated company that background checks every employee. You can feel safe and confident moving with us.

Unfortunately, there are some unreputable, scam companies that take advantage of the unsuspecting public. Read below...

A smart consumer recognizing the signs of being scammed, called the Houston Police Department and reported that the operators posing as movers in her house were not real movers, but in fact were thieves. HPD advised "don't do anything except stay out of their way; we are on the way". They arrived in time to find the customer's missing iPod, diamond earrings, a loaded gun, and prescription medicine, tucked away in the cab of the unmarked truck and arrested two men, both with previous felony charges including theft, drugs and assault. The Channel 2 Investigative Reporter attempted to interview the owners of two unlicensed operators involved in these scams about their illegal operations; they didn't have much to say, and quickly disappeared behind closed doors. Household Moving Tips

Here are a few more useful tips to ensure a smooth moving experience:

Get Organized

• Write everything down. Before you pack even one box, create a simple record keeping system.

• Have plenty of supplies. You'll need plenty of boxes; probably more boxes than you think. If you buy your boxes from a moving company, you can always return unused boxes for a refund. Have about 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on moving day such as bedding, clothing and cleaning supplies.

• Notify the post office, magazines, credit card companies, and friends and family of your change of address. The U. S. Postal Service offers a kit to make this process easier.

Home Safe Home – Safety Tips for Your Next Move

By The Safety Mom - as posted on https://www.adtsafemove.com/

Change the locks – Former babysitters, housekeepers or workers could still have a key to your new home. It’s worth the investment to get new locks. Hiding a spare key outside is never a good idea. Install a key lock box instead.

Install baby proofing items – If you have a toddler, make sure you've baby proofed before you move in. A hardware-mounted gate must be installed at the top of the stairs, furniture should be secured to the walls and window guards and window wedges or window stops should be installed.

Check for fire extinguishers – Chances are you didn’t consider taking your fire extinguishers with you so be sure that there are some in your new home. Even if there are, consider getting new ones. Fire extinguishers last about 5 - 15 years but you probably won’t know how old yours are.

Inspect the yard – If your new home came with a play set, patio furniture or other outdoor items, be sure they’re in good working order and are free of beehives. Purchase warning signs for the driveway alerting delivery trucks that children are playing in your yard.

Stock up on emergency supplies - If you’re moving from an apartment to a house you might need more flashlights, batteries or other emergency provisions that you didn’t have before.

Have an emergency evacuation plan – Determine a meeting place away from the house and designate a neighbor’s home as the place your children should go if they need to evacuate. Be sure that all smoke detectors are in good working order. ADT Security Services offers free carbon monoxide and fire monitoring for new and existing customers.
